What is a Collectible? A collectible is generally an object that is abundant and affordable. In the early 1960's collectibles were for the most part new items. They were created by companies and then marketed specifically to be collectible
or gifts. An example of these
items include
Hot Wheels,
G. I. Joe toys and
Barbie Dolls.
Now, the word collectibles tends to be used for things that aren't necessarily old. To encourage collecting,
a wholesale collectibles manufacturer often create an entire series of a given collectible, with each item differentiated in some fashion.
The earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other products, or the products themselves. Examples include
Baseball Cards
depicting individual players in a pack of gum. So we now have two basic types of collectibles or collectables. Items made to be collectibles since the early 1960's and a much older items not yet antiques.
Can a Collectible also be considered an Antique? Things that are more than one hundred years old are considered antiques. So not
all old collectibles are antique! However some of the most popular collectibles are items from the early 1900's to about 1960. These items are highly prized by a special breed of collectors and include such items as
Coca Cola,
Coins, and
Old Postcards
